Mamey - Another Magnesium Power House and My New Favorite Fruit!

Mammy-apple (mamey) - in the raw!

I just discovered this amazingly sweet and delicious fruit yesterday in the streets of Sayulita, Mexico.  (I'm here to celebrate one year of being on a raw food loving diet with my dear friend Tamara, who also embarked on this amazing raw food lifestyle right here in Sayulita last year with me.....so we are back and celebrating!)

Mamey tastes like a perfectly cooked sweet potato in its raw, natural form, with melt-in-your-mouth texture and a rich caramel flavor, it tastes a lot like a flan dessert.

I was hoping it was as good of you nutrition-wise as it tastes...and it is!!  These are the highlights of the goodness in one serving of Mamey.

Magnesium - 153 mg
Potassium - 398 mg
Vitamin C - 1946 mg
Vitamin A - 118 IU
Fiber - 25.4 g

You can order Mamey online from Lyon Farms in Homestead, Florida by Clicking Here. Sadly, I just tried to order and Mamey is "Out of Season" right now.

Magnesium may decrease colon cancer risk

Magnesium may decrease colon cancer risk

Increased intakes of magnesium may reduce a man’s risk of colon cancer by over 50 per cent, says a new observational study from Japan.Intakes of the mineral of at least 327 milligrams per day were found to reduce the risk of colon cancer by 52 per cent, compared to intakes less than 238 milligrams per day, while no benefits were observed in women, according to findings published in the Journal of Nutrition. Being an epidemiological study, the findings do not prove causality, and additional studies, and particularly randomised trials, are needed to confirm the findings, said researchers from Japan’s National Cancer Center in Tokyo.

Jackfruit Discovery in Singapore

I've never seen a Jackfruit before this trip to Singapore!

I love it!
It's very sweet (has a honey flavor) and is easy to eat you if buy it cut up and packaged from "Cold Storage" as I did. See extra wiki pics for reference on what they look like NOT cut open and nicely packaged.

Here is the Wiki Knowledge:
The jackfruit is a species of tree in the mulberry family (Moraceae), which is native to parts of South and Southeast Asia. It is the national fruit of Bangladesh.  It is well suited to tropical lowlands. Its fruit is the largest tree borne fruit in the world, seldom less than about 25 cm (10 in) in diameter.

Day 5 - Semi-Raw in Singapore: Dinner at Clarke Quay

Day 5 was a great day for staying clean and raw - having consumed fruit and veg up until 7:30 pm.

We met our friend Elaine at Clarke Quay for dinner and stopped at The Clinic for a pre-dinner cocktail: a non-raw gin and tonic.

We chose a Vietnamese/Indo-Chine restaurant called Forbidden.

Our starters were nearly raw: Green papaya salad and grapefruit with prawn salad. The entrees we shared (not pictured) were green curry duck, steamed black cod and sea bass with mango salad.

Day 5 - Raw in Singapore Lunch by the Pool

Yesterday I discovered Sweet Thai Water Apples at the same fruit stand where I found Mangosteen.

This was a perfect light lunch.

I was pleasantly surprised that the Water Apples had such little waste - you can eat everything including the one small seed.
The mangosteens were a bit messy and hard to open, but SO worth sticky hands and the effort.

Off to Clarke Quay for dinner tonight....hope I can stay on my raw food living diet since I've done so well thus far today.

Pumpkin Pond Farm in Nantucket, MA

Organic greens galore... and more!
I love small organic farms and this one is so adorable.

Within 15 minutes of landing on the small island of Nantucket, my dear friend, and island local, took me to the precious Pumpkin Pond Farm to pick up our greens and veggies for our lunch. My friend is also enjoying (and thriving) on the raw food living diet. In fact, she and I "went raw" together in Mexico - but I'll save that for another posting.

As a newbie raw foodie and fanatic for organic farms, I was thrilled to walk the gardens with their knowledgeable staff to harvest our living food for the week.

Here's what we purchased:

The sweetest cucumbers I've ever tasted
Wild spinach
Calendula flowers
Just pick, ripe tomatoes
Chards of many colors
Lettuces of many kinds. Sorry,  I was so enthralled with the moment I did not write down the names
Green Beans
Parsley
