Five Major Poisons Inherently Found in Animal Foods

Protein, fat, cholesterol, methionine (a sulfur-containing amino acid), and dietary acids, which are all superabundant in animal foods, are poisoning nearly everyone following the standard Western diet. Most people cannot fathom this, because it takes four or more decades of consumption before disability, disfigurement, and death become common from these endogenous toxins. This long latent period fools the public into thinking there is no harm done by choosing an animal-food-based diet. If the case were one of instantaneous feedback—one plate of fried eggs caused excruciating chest pains, paralysis from a stroke followed a prime rib dinner, or a hard cancerous lump appeared within a week of a grilled cheese sandwich—then eating animal foods would be widely recognized as an exceedingly unwise choice. Similar failures to appreciate slow poisonings from our lifestyle choices are seen with tobacco and alcohol use. If one package of cigarettes were followed by a week on a respirator or a bottle or two of gin caused hepatic (liver) coma then no one would indulge in these instruments of long-drawn-out death either. The difference defining the failure to take long overdue actions is that the dangers from tobacco and alcohol use are universally known and accepted, whereas almost everyone considers red meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products necessary parts of a healthy diet.

Dietary Supplements ::: What do you take and why?

Replacing missing dietary nutrients may be necessary – and good business – but it may also be more problematical than it sounds. In the China Study Dr. Campbell, contends that “isolating nutrients and trying to get benefits equal to those of whole foods reveals an ignorance of how nutrition operates in the body”. His argument is not that these nutrients aren’t commonly deficient or that they are unimportant – he agrees they are essential – but only when consumed as food, not supplements.

Dietary supplements are intended to supply nutrients – such as vitamins, minerals, fatty acids or amino acids - missing, depleted or consumed in insufficient quantity for health.

With rising awareness of widespread micronutrient deficiency and concern for the health affects of resulting imbalances, dietary supplementation has become big business. In 2004, there were 1500 manufacturing and repacking facilities for dietary supplements in the US producing about 29,000 unique formulations packed into more than 75,000 distinctly labeled products (1). The industry represents $4.7 billion dollars, and is expected to grow to $6 billion dollars by 2011 (2).

Though the medical utility and regulatory status of dietary supplements remains controversial, two-thirds of 700 physicians attending a 1994 meeting of the American College of Cardiology to discuss this issue acknowledged using daily supplements themselves (3).

In 2002, the Journal of the American Medical Association published a review that more officially condoned supplementation. Summarizing 30-years of articles relating vitamins and chronic disease, the Harvard researchers concluded that general vitamin deficiency put most Americans at heightened risk for osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and cancer (4). They went further to recommend that: “all adults take one multivitamin daily.”

Still, there is clear consensus that people are deficient (or imbalanced) nutritionally, and marginal deficiencies – aside from being associated with cancer, heart disease and neural tube disorders (5) – may have much more subtle ill effects, gradually impairing cell metabolism and becoming evident only after years or decades (6).

So the allied questions of how to replace these missing nutrients, and how they came to be so lacking or out of balance in the first place, are paramount to national health.

As you consider the supplements you have taken (or are taking) and why you were convinced you needed them,
I would love to hear your perspective on these issues!

Give kids a healthy future

Dear friends,

More than 31 million children participate in the National School Lunch Program. Many consume as many as half their daily calories at school. Helping schools serve real food may be the most promising way to end child obesity - but it simply can't happen unless Congress invests in healthier food in the upcoming Child Nutrition Act.

Will you send an email to your legislators to help schools serve real food?

As an organization, Slow Food gets involved in policy when we see big problems with America's food system that can only be solved if citizens speak up. Teaching children to make good food choices will require hard work from parents, schools, non-profits, the private sector and government. But an enormously important step is to ensure that the National School Lunch Program isn't undermining those efforts, and is instead serving kids the healthy food they need to grow up into able, productive adults.

On a conference call this week, USDA Secretary Vilsack said that the most important thing citizens can do to get healthier food into their local schools is to urge Congress to pass a strong Child Nutrition Act. This issue has broad public support, he said, but it isn't appearing in the national media - so we need to make sure Congress gets the message.

That's where you come in. Now that Michelle Obama is leading the charge, Congress will begin updating the Child Nutrition Act this month. If legislators hear support from citizens back home, they'll have the opportunity to invest in healthier food, strengthen nutrition standards, and equip schools to buy local and cook meals from scratch.

So please take a minute to email your legislators today.

Thank you,

Gordon Jenkins

The Power of Carrot Juice!

I love carrots, but used to shy away from eating them too much because they have a lot of natural sugars. Well, that was BEFORE I started thriving on the Raw Food Living Diet.

Now I eat carrots each week because organic carrots are relatively easy to get, about $1.50 per pound, and are very easy to juice!!

Plus you can save the pulp for mixing into your dehydrated crackers!

Then when I saw that Carrot Juice scored 344 on the ANDI scale, I thought I'd look into finding more information about carrot juice properties and benefits. After reading the below article on living-foods.com I will be adding carrots to my juicing much, much moreI

The Wonders of Carrot Juice By John B. Lust

Carrot juice, because of its many healthful benefits, is frequently called a the "miracle juice." A large number of people--throughout the United States and in all walks of life--suffering from various ailments have found that the inclusion of carrot juice in their diet has greatly improved their health. Countless others have found it to be a valuable "protective" agent in the building and maintenance of health in both children and adults, while its delicious flavor makes it popular with all members of the family as a beverage --plain or combined with other juices.

Gold mine of nutrients.

Carrot juice is one of the richest sources of vitamin A that can be used in the daily diet. It also ranks high as a source of the other vitamins, especially those of the B complex. Its mineral content is equally rich, and includes calcium, copper, magnesium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, chlorine, sulfur, and iron.

The vitamin A content of carrot juice helps to strengthen the eyes. In many cases where defective eyesight was noted--as during the war--the condition was overcome by fortifying the diet with fresh carrot juice.

One of the first evidences of vitamin A deficiency may be noted in the difficulty of adjusting the sight in a dim light, as in entering a dark room, or theatre, from a brightly lighted hall. A more serious symptom is the inability to regain focus of the road after the glare of passing automobile headlights. This sight defect is known as "night blindness," or "glare-blindness," and has been the cause of many serious accidents.

Vitamin A is essential in keeping healthy condition the mucous membranes which line all the cavities of the body. The mucous membrane may be described as consisting of two layers. The top layer, ~nown as epithelium is composed of billions of cells. Close under the epithelium lies the mucous membrane, a thin layer of involuntary muscle fibers., which are extremely pliable and elastic. The vitality of this lining depends upon an adequate supply of vitamin A. When a deficiency of vitamin A exists the cells harden and degenerate into a horny rough surface, obstructing the normal function of the secretion of the disinfectant mucous. Infections resulting from vitamin A deficiency may affect the bladder or kidneys, the alimentary tract, the mouth, tonsils, sinuses, the tongue, ear canal, eyes or tear ducts.

Vitamin A promotes growth of bones and teeth, the maintenance of healthy body tissues, and the maintenance of normal glandular functions. It aids in the resistance to infections.  Vitamin A is especially necessary in the diet of expectant mothers to build up and maintain the health of both mother and the developing child.   Fresh carrot juice should be included in the diet not only during pregnancy, but also during the period of nursing the baby.

In addition to those already mentioned, some of the symptoms which have been traced to vitamin A deficiency are: dry, scaly and rough skin, especially on the arms and legs; intestinal disorders and diarrhea; poor appetite; retarded growth; lack of vigor loss in weight and physical weakness; atrophy of the glands; poor development of teeth through defective  formation of enamel and dentine--and poor gum structure, and may also be a causative factor in cases of sterility; nerve degeneration and stones in the kidney and bladder.

It is pointed out by many authorities that where a vitamin A deficiency exists, it may be the result of either inadequate amount of this vitamin in the diet, or of faulty metabolism. The latter condition may be a symptom of some physical disorder which requires diagnosis and treatment by a physician.

Another cause of vitamin A deficiency is the practice of using mineral oil which carries off the vitamin A before it has been absorbed by the system. Mineral oil should not be used in salad dressing for this reason, and, under any condition, should be used only on the advice of a physician, usually as a temporary measure only.

When changes occur in the tissues because of vitamin A deficiency, the natural protection against bacteria is removed and the tissues become diseased. An adequate intake of vitamin A--especially in carrot juice-will help overcome infection.

Vitamin A is soluble in fat but not in water. Consequently, surplus vitamin A is not lost in the body fluids, such as urine, perspiration, etc., but is stored for future use. Approximately 958 of all such surplus vitamin A is stored in the liver, with small amounts in the ~dneys, lungs and under the skin.

Your daily requirements

The Food and Nutrition Committee of the National Research Council has established a scale for the minimum daily requirement of vitamin A as follows:

Who Int. Units
Children under 1 year 1500
Children 1 to 12 years 2000 to 3500
Adolescent girls & boys 4500 to 5000
Adults - men and women 5000
Women during pregnancy 6000
Women during nursing period 8000

The above scale is based upon the minimum required to prevent deficiency diseases and does not provide the necessary surplus required for full health.

My fantasy public service announcement.

Announcer Voice:

This is a message from the Emergency Broadcasting System. Federal, state and local authorities have developed this system to keep you informed in the event of an emergency.
President Obama's Voice:
This is NOT a test. America is in crisis!
Follow these 3 simple instructions to save your life.
Are you ready? OK, here’s what you need to do immediately:

#1 Eat a whole food, plant-based diet.
Why? Because all of the nutrients you need including fiber and antioxidants are only found in plant-based foods. And there are no nutrients in animal-based foods, including protein, that are not better provided by plants.

#2 Do not eat meat and dairy products to get your protein.
Why? Animal products are killing you! Yes, you heard me correctly. It’s the truth we’ve been hiding from you for decades. In fact, over 40 years of research proves that animal based protein causes cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, MS, and a host of other chronic diseases.

#3 Stay away from processed, packaged foods.
They are void of nutrients and laden with toxic chemicals.
If you want to get healthy, prevent and even reverse diseases, lose weight, have more energy and feel great then you must act now! Tell your friends and neighbors. This is a national emergency!

Announcer Voice:
If this had NOT been an actual emergency, then you would not be living in a country where one-third of the adult population is obese.

8 Steps Obama Could Take to Save Food

8 Steps Obama Could Take to Save Food

November 20th, 2009  By Robyn O'Brien

The landscape of health has changed. No longer are our families guaranteed a healthy livelihood, not in the face of the current rates of cancer, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer’s and allergies. In the words of Elizabeth Warren, Harvard University law professor who is head of the Congressional Oversight Panel, “We need a new model,” and we need a new food system. It’s our health on the line.

8 Steps Obama Could Take to Save Food:

1. Evenly distribute government moneys to all farmers. The current system allocates the lion share of our tax dollars (approximately $60 billion) to farmers growing crops whose seeds have been engineered to produce their own insecticides and tolerate increasing doses of weed killing herbicides. As a result, these crops, with a large chemical footprint, are cheaper to produce, while farmers growing organic produce are charged fees to prove that their crops are safe and then charged additional fees to label these crops as free of synthetic chemicals and “organic”. If organic farmers received an equal distribution of taxpayer funded handouts from the government, the cost of producing crops free from synthetic chemicals would be cheaper, making these crops more affordable to more people, in turn increasing demand for these products which would further drive down costs.  If we were to reallocate our national budget and evenly distribute our tax dollars to all farmers, clean food would be affordable to everyone and not just those in certain zip codes.

2. Reinstitute the USDA pesticide reporting standard that was waived under the Bush administration. In 2008, the USDA waived pesticide reporting requirements (a procedure that has been in place since the early 1990s) so that farmers and consumers would know the level of chemicals being applied to food crops. Given a report just released that reveals a 383 million pound increase in the use of weed killing herbicides since the introduction of herbicide tolerant crops in 1996 and the potential impact that this glyphosate containing compound is having on both the environment and on our health, perhaps the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy assumed under the previous administration should be reversed.

3. Reinstate the pre-Bush administration dollar value that the EPA places on the life of every American. in May 2008, the Bush administration lowered the value placed on the life of every American by almost $1 million, benefiting corporations who use this figure in their cost benefit analyses, marking down our lives from $7.8 million to $6.9 million the same way a car dealer might markdown a “96 Camaro with bad brakes. The EPA figure is used to assess corporate liability when a company’s actions put a life at risk. While this figure benefits the corporations conducting the cost benefit analysis when assessing the health impact of their chemicals, the costs of these chemicals are being externalized onto the public in the form of health care costs.

4. Allow public debate over the nomination of pesticide lobbyist, Islam Siddiqui for Chief Agriculture Negotiator at the office of the United States Trade Representative. As addressed in a letter sent to Chairman Max Baucus and Ranking Member Charles Grassley of the Senate Finance Committee, Islam Siddiqui, nominated for Chief Agriculture Negotiator at the office of the United States Trade Representative, was formerly employed by CropLife America, whose firm challenged Michelle Obama’s organic garden, has consistently lobbied the U.S government to weaken international treaties governing the use and export of toxic chemicals such as PCBs, DDT and dioxins, and blocked international attempts to help regulate pesticides that increasingly linked to chronic skin and respiratory problems, birth defects and cancer in our community. Given that a growing body of scientific evidence supports the theory that chemicals in our food are contributing to the rise in health problems, particularly in children, the appointment of an industry lobbyist to export our challenged food system to the rest of the world may be in the best interest of agrichemical corporations but consideration should also be given to the health implications that these novel chemicals, proteins and allergens may have.

5. Encourage climate change advocates like Al Gore to discuss Pesticide Use by Big Ag and its Chemical Footprint. While speaking openly about the petroleum industry’s impact on global warming, leading environmental advocates like Al Gore have been quiet about the chemical contribution that the recent introduction of crops genetically engineered with pesticidal toxins play on global warming despite scientific evidence from the Royal Society of Chemistry highlighting their impact. Since the Clinton Administration’s introduction of biotech crops designed and engineered to both withstand increasing doses of weed killing chemicals and produce their own insecticides, new reports based on USDA data, show a 383 million pound increase in the chemicals being applied to these crops since their introduction in 1996. According to the Royal Society of Chemistry, “growing biofuels is probably of no benefit and in fact is actually making the climate issue worse” given that glyphosate, being applied in increasing doses to these crops, breaks down into nitrogen.

6. Update the Consumer Protection and Food Allergen Labeling Act to inform consumers of these newly engineered corn allergens. The recent engineering of novel food proteins and toxins into the US food supply has enhanced profitability for the food industry by allowing commodities like corn to produce their own insecticides. As a result, corn is now considered an insecticide and regulated by the EPA .  For this same reason, this corn has been either banned or labeled in products in other developed countries because the new toxins and novel allergens that it contains have not yet been proven safe. Despite the lack of evidence, this corn is in the American food supply. The increase in the rate of food allergies as demonstrated in the December issue of Pediatrics and the growing number of people with this condition- whose bodies recognize food as “foreign” and launch inflammatory reaction in an effort to drive out these “foreign” food invaders, speaks to the need to update and amend the food allergen labeling act to label these newly engineered genetically enhanced proteins and allergens as governments around the world do.

7. Ask the SEC to join the Department of Justice in its investigation into trade practices in agrichemical industry. As the Department of Justice begins its investigation into the impact that Monsanto’s monopoly is having on farmers, their financial situation and the food supply, research out of the USDA highlights that the biotech industry is not delivering on what some are calling their “hype-to-reality ratio”. As farmers are charged premiums for seeds that have been engineered to produce greater yields, research out of the USDA, Kansas State University shows that these products are not delivering as promised, directly impacting the cost structures of farmers in a razor to razorblade scenario. As farmers purchase genetically modified seeds in the hopes that they will increase yields and drive down cost structure and their dependency on weed killers, studies now suggest that since the introduction of the “razor”, these biotech crops introduced 13 years ago, farmers are actually spending more on the “razorblade”, the herbicides and weed killers required to manage them, driving farmers debt to asset ratios to record levels. Given that Monsanto’s CFO, Treasurer, Controller are all leaving the company by year end, the Securities and Exchange Commission could interview these three exiting executives and learn more about the financial predicaments of Big Ag’s customers, the farmers, and the greater ramifications that this monopoly will have on food prices.

8. Appoint a Children’s Health Advisor to serve on the USDA’s National School Lunch Program. The landscape of children’s health has changed. No longer are the American children guaranteed a healthy childhood, not in the face of the current rates of obesity, diabetes and allergies. Perhaps it is time that we follow the lead of governments in other developed countries and create a Chief Advisor for Child and Youth Health whose responsibilities might include, but not be limited to, serving in an advisory capacity to the USDA on the National School Lunch Program. Under the USDA’s current budget for the National School Lunch Program of approximately $8.5 billion (in comparison the Pentagon’s 2009 budget $600 billion), less than a dollar is available per meal for the purchase of healthy food once overhead costs are taken out. Given that 1 in 3 American children now has allergies, ADHD, autism of asthma and according to an October 2008 study from the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 3 Fourth graders is expected to be insulin dependent by the time they reach adulthood. As a result, dietary concerns are becoming increasingly prevalent for the estimated 30.9 million children and approximately 102,000 schools and child care institutions that participate in the National School Lunch Program. Given that increasing scientific evidence points to the roles that environmental insults like synthetic growth hormones in milk and trans fats in processed foods are having on our health, investing in a children’s health advisor may provide long term benefits to the future of our health care system .

It’s our food system on the line.  And if our children are any indicator, our health and the economic burden that it presents are on the line, too.del.icio.usYahoo! Buzz

According to the New York Times, Robyn O'Brien is "food's Erin Brockovich." As the founder of AllergyKids, an organization designed to protect the 1 in 3 American children with autism, allergies, ADHD and asthma, Robyn has appeared on Good Morning America, CBS Evening News with Katie Couric and CNN highlighting the role that chemicals in our food supply are having on our health. Born and raised in a conservative Texas family on supply side economics and the Wall Street Journal, Robyn earned a Fulbright Fellowship, an MBA and served as an equity analyst on a multibillion dollar fund prior to moving to Boulder, Colorado with her husband and four children. She is the author of the book, The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food Is Making Us Sick and What We Can Do About It.

Inspiration to try a raw food diet

I decided to try a raw food living diet about 6 months ago (March 5, 2009 to be exact!).  I was doing Dr. Hulda Clark's Liver Cleanse* designed to remove "stones" from the gallbladder and liver. In addition to some fresh juiced apple juice she recommends eating "light" meals like vegetables. So I decided to drink greeen smoothies for convenience. It was only a 4 day cleanse, but I felt so GREAT on the green smoothie diet that I decided to keep going. I had never even heard of a raw food diet at this point. I just knew I loved how I felt.

I just saw this video thanks to FAKE POSTEROUS, and wanted to share it too, because I really hope I'm still as vibrant as this woman when I'm her age, as I fully intend to stay on the raw food diet for the rest of my life. The women in the video, Mimi Kirk , is 71 and you won't believe how young she looks!  Mimi gives a great testimonial for going on a raw food living diet, and I concur with her; that eating a raw food diet has changed my body, my skin, an even my brain/mood for the better.  Watch the video and maybe you will be inspired too!

*Cleansing the liver of gallstones dramatically improves digestion that is the basis good health. After cleansing the liver you can expect many or all of your allergies to disappear and possibly more with each subsequent cleanse. It is believed that with each liver cleanse a different set of allergies are alleviated, suggesting that the liver is compartmentalized - different parts having different duties – so it follows that by getting all the stones out, all allergies may disappear. Some people have actually reported an elimination of their shoulder, upper arm and upper back pain after a liver cleanse.
